Laketran is the regional transit authority for Lake County, Ohio. Established in 1974, Laketran has since developed into a county-wide transit authority carrying over one million passengers annually. As a government non-profit organization, Laketran released a Request for Proposal (RFP) for Website Design, Development and Management Services in early 2008, finally selecting iNamics out of 50 total submissions. Managed Website Hosting Lessons Learned: One important lesson learned over the duration of the Laketran project centers around custom coding and custom application development. Heavily reliant upon the use of a pre-existing payment Gateway, PayPal, Laketran assumed (at least initially) that transactional security would far outweigh any limitations inherent in PayPal. In an effort to streamline the uses of this gateway to include both website visitors and authorized Laketran personnel, iNamics collaborated with Laketran to build and customize a manual payment gateway. The result is an extremely sophisticated system that securely and automatically processes payments from two very different ends of the organization. Integrated into the new gateway are highly refined reporting capabilities that assist Laketran in their pursuit of recognition for excellence in financial budgeting and reporting, communications, and federal triennial reviews. Because this system was, in effect, able to automate two separate processes (and provide reporting and tracking on both), the initial development costs and time were quickly regenerated by the long-term cost and time savings. Another important experience in developing the Laketran website deals with the use of frequently updated information. Along Laketran’s fixed routes, up-to-date and accurate information is required. Initially, the website was equipped with an SQL database pulling fare, route, and schedule information to dynamically displayed pages. This capability was sufficient for single-route passengers. Increasingly, however, Laketran noticed a need for a feature to enable flexible trip planning using solely public transportation. In 2010, iNamics completed the integration with Google Transit which enables visitors to obtain step-by-step transit directions, locate transit stops, and view station information and schedules all within one on-line application.
