What is Thin Client Computing?

Thin Client Computing is a server-centric computing model where your application software, data, and CPU power resides on a network server rather than on each individual client computer. A Thin Client is essential just a computer terminal used in a central server computing network analogous to and huge improvement upon mainframe computing using dumb terminals. All the standard applications you're use to running, such as Microsoft Word, and data storage run on the server behind data center firewalls. iNamics thin clients include a windows GUI, keyboard and mouse, and are capable of handling terminal emulations. All software applications and data is retrieved from an centrl server and all the data entered is saved on the same central server. The data and software will look and feel the same as on a PC for any user on the network, which makes it easier for users to work in multiple locations. Thin Clients only need to run the operating system software locally, and have no hard drives or floppy drives. Thin client computing permits local printing, audio and serial device support, web browsing, terminal emulation and can combine local processing with network computing. Since there are no data drives, thin clients are protected from the use of unauthorized software or the introduction of viruses. Data cannot be copied to a disk or saved to any other location than the central server. All software maintenance, upgrades and virus protection is performed on the server, which makes it much easier and cost-effective for IT managers to keep networks running smoothly and efficiently by performing tasks such as software installations and upgrades remotely rather than having to visit each end-user device. In the event of a disaster, recovery is much more immediate, because data backups are handled on the central server. If a thin client terminal is damaged or destroyed, a new one can be configured automatically without the physical presence of IT assistance. Thin Clients costs less to purchase than PCs, and since they have no moving parts, they have a longer lifespan. Software upgrades and backups can be handled by IT staff at the central server, dramatically reducing support costs. Thin clients also use one-seventh of the power required by PCs.

Green and Ergonomic

Thin clients are smaller, lighter and quieter than standard PCs, require a fraction of the electricity and take up much less space.

Close
Standardized Local and Remote Computing

Regardless from where they log in -- from inside or outside the office -- your employees are presented with an identical desktop, applications and work files.

Close
Secure

If desired, a thin client can be configured with zero local storage capacity, greatly reducing the chance of data theft or loss. Plus, transfer of all data can be encripted and secured by a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection.

Close
Low Maintenance

With office applications and data residing exclusively on servers, and with little or no local configuration information to lose, desktop support issues are almost nonexistent. Furthermore, being simpler devices than desktop PCs, thin clients typically run longer without failure. And when a unit does fail, it much easier to troubleshoot and replace, even by a non-technical person.

Freedom to run more than just Windows Applications

Depending on the application server types installed and available, the user may access Linux, UNIX and mainframe programs in addition to Windows applications.

Close
Effective both Local or Remote

Not having to move large files between a server and the client which demand more system resources, thin client computing has relatively modest bandwidth requirements, Thin client computing is typically satisfactory even over a slower broadband Internet connection because it only requires light mouse, keyboard or video display traffic.
